Free Blood Pressure Screenings

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CONTACT: Don Rawson, Emergency Manager, (760) 839-5404

This Valentine’s Day, Friday, February 14, 2014, the Escondido Fire Department is collaborating with Live Well San Diego to host two “Love Your Heart!” FREE blood pressure screenings. These FREE screenings will be from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM at Escondido Fire Station #3, 1808 Nutmeg Street, Escondido and the Park Avenue Community Center (home of the Escondido Senior Center), 210 East Park Avenue, Escondido.

Love Your Heart is a one-day event to provide free blood pressure screenings to the public at select sites throughout the San Diego region. The goal of Love Your Heart is to activate San Diegans to “know their numbers” and take charge of their own heart health. Live Well San Diego seeks to help residents’ live healthy, safe, and thriving lives through the collective impact of the entire San Diego community.

Here are a few steps you can take to be heart-healthy:

KNOW YOUR NUMBERS
Know your heart health numbers to screen and control for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes. These numbers include your blood pressure, cholesterol and triglyceride levels, and glucose and A1c levels.

GET ACTIVE
Perform moderate physical activity for at least 30 minutes five days a week (you can also conduct three 10-minute sessions daily)—and make it fun! Try organizing a walking club with your friends and family. Get outside and enjoy the beauty of San Diego County.

EAT HEART-HEALTHY FOODS
Eat fresh fruits and vegetables whenever possible – at least 5 servings each day, low-fat or non-fat dairy, and foods high in fiber. Avoid foods high in sodium, saturated and trans fats, and sugar.

AVOID TOBACCO
If you are a smoker, quit! For help quitting call the California Smokers Helpline at 800-NO BUTTS (800-662-8887) or visit www.smokefreesandiego.org. You can also text the word QUIT to IQUIT (47848) from your mobile phone to receive tips on how to stop smoking for good!
