FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CONTACT: Ken Slaven, Battalion Chief (760) 520-5376.
On Saturday November 3, Escondido Fire Department units were initially dispatched to a vehicle accident on southbound Interstate 15 near Via Rancho Parkway. As the units responded, dispatch reported that multiple vehicles were involved and that one was on fire with a trapped patient. Bystanders and three off-duty Deputy Sheriffs assisted the injured and kept the fire from burning the trapped patient. Escondido firefighters had to fight the fire while extricating the patient from the heavily damaged vehicle. That patient was flown by air ambulance to UCSD Medical Center while four other patients were transported by Escondido ambulances to area hospitals. Two engines, three ambulances, the truck company and one chief from the Escondido Fire Department responded to this incident. One San Marcos truck was requested, but cancelled prior to arrival. Numerous California Highway Patrol Officers, several Deputy Sheriffs, multiple Cal Trans units, one Mercy Air Ambulance, and several tow vehicles were also needed to mitigate this incident.
