FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Contact Battalion Chief Tyler Batson (760) 522-0516

On June 4, 2021 at approximately 5:58 p.m., the Escondido Police and Fire Communication Center received a report of a fire in a two-story commercial building located at 255 N. Ash Street. The first arriving Engine Captain reported smoke showing from the roof and the first story of the structure. The fire was identified to be inside ventilation ducting and spreading to the walls and ceiling. Due to the size of the building and potential for fire spread, a second alarm was requested.

The two-story structure sustained smoke and fire damage in the center of the occupancy, on both the first and second floors, from the smoldering fire that spread through ducting and ignited structural components of the building. Aggressive action by the firefighters contained the fire in approximately 26 minutes, however the building required extensive overhaul to ensure the fire was completely extinguished.

Fortunately, there were no injuries to firefighters or civilians. In all, 44 firefighters and one fire prevention specialist responded to the fire. Assistance was provided from Rancho Santa Fe, Vista, and San Marcos Fire Departments. Escondido Police provided scene safety and road closures. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Safety message: Service heating and cooling equipment annually to prevent equipment failure and overheating. These malfunctions have been known to start fires.
