On December 28, 2018 at approximately 8:45 a.m., the Escondido Police and Fire Communication Center received a report of a fire at 1044 W. Washington Ave., Escondido Disposal Inc. A structure fire response was dispatched to the location. The first arriving Officer reported heavy black smoke coming from the front of a large commercial building. Due to the potential for the fire to spread and the threat to life, an upgrade in the response was requested along with an additional second alarm.

Aggressive action by the firefighters contained and controlled the fire in approximately 45 minutes. There were no injuries to firefighters or civilians. In all 9 Fire Engines, 3 Truck Companies, 2 Rescue Ambulances and 2 Battalion Chiefs responded to the fire.

Escondido Police units provided road closures.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Safety Message: Smoke alarms should be tested regularly and removable batteries should be changed twice per year.
