FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Contact: Battalion Chief Britt Matthews (760) 560-7432

On August 16, 2022 at approximately 5:09 p.m., the Escondido Police and Fire Communication Center received multiple reports of a home on fire in the area of West 11th Avenue and South Orange Street. Callers also reported that there was possibly two people still inside the home.

While enroute to the fire, the Engine Captain from Station #5 (Felicita) reported smoke showing from a distance. When on scene, the Captain reported that the home was fully involved with smoke and fire venting from the windows. Firefighters aggressively attacked the fire while searching for anyone in the home. Although hampered by a large accumulation of belongings in the home, firefighters were able to locate and remove a female victim who was transported in critical condition to Palomar Medical Center. A short time later, a male victim was located and removed from the home. Despite lifesaving efforts and rapid transportation to the hospital, the male victim unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.

Forty-two firefighters responded to the fire, including assistance from Ranch Santa Fe Fire and San Marcos Fire. Escondido Police also assisted by securing the area and closing streets. Fortunately, there were no injuries to first responders.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by Escondido Police Detectives assisted by Escondido Fire investigators.
