Swift Water Rescue Feb 2019

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Contact Battalion Chief Jeff Sargis (760) 705-7122

On February 14, 2019 at approximately 4:00 p.m., the Escondido Police and Fire Communication Center received a report of a person in distress in the flood control channel near the over crossing of N. Rose St. on the east side of Escondido. Due to the large amount of rainfall during the hours prior, the flood control channel was fast moving and at near capacity. Multiple fire units, including swift water rescue teams and law enforcement resources were ordered and placed at various locations along the flood control channel to locate the person in the water.

The victim was ultimately located just north of Tulip Street in some reeds and the rescue efforts became a recovery operation. Swift Water Rescue teams, with the assistance of firefighters, deployed a rescue boat and recovered the body shortly after 6:00 p.m. The identity of the victim has not yet been released. Firefighters from Escondido, San Marcos, Valley Center, CalFire and Life Guards from Encinitas assisted in the recovery. Escondido Police Units provided crowd and traffic control.

Safety Message: Please stay out of the flood control channel. After heavy rains, flood control channels are designed to move large quantities of water very quickly. The water is moving fast enough to move vehicles downstream. Tree limbs and other large items that may have been thrown into the flood control channel are also moving quickly down the channel. Self-extrication from the water may be nearly impossible. While drowning is a high possibility, serious injury or even death may result from the fast moving debris in the channel.
